I started this book back in February. The plan was

I started this book back in February. The plan was to soak up as many words as possible to compensate for my lack of words. I simply couldn’t write. All that I had were a bunch of half-done pieces that didn’t resonate with my voice. So what better way to counter my writer’s block than an immersion into a world full of words.

But life as you know it has its way of doing things—one which is hard to comprehend or foretell. That sometimes, all you have to do is take the backseat and just watch how things play out. And that’s what I did. Agitated and frustrated at some point, I stopped the chase and decided if the words needed me that much, they should find me.

Concurrently, as a family, we were going through a rough patch. I was dealing with the prospect of my mum undergoing surgery, which didn’t sit right with me at the time; my cousin was coping with grief, and I just had to be there for him, and weeks later, two of our family members tested positive for covid-19. The sole reason my mind got so sidetracked that I left my book unattended after only cruising the first two chapters—a severe crime for anyone with a thing for books.

Fast forward to this week, when I picked it up once again. This time determined to get it done by the end of the month. After a month of uncertainty and what felt like a series of unfortunate events, I’m finally in the suitable mind space to get the pieces together. Finding my voice again is what I’d call it if I were melodramatic. And if you’re the spiritual kind, you’d dub it as an awakening. I prefer to call it what it is—getting my shit together. Or anything along those lines.

You see death is such a cruel thing. A dark cloud of sorrow that strikes with neither mercy nor warning. A hard time for the family and friends – and a chance to finally find peace and eternal rest for the deceased. Two things that are almost impossible to find in this roller-coaster of emotions we call life. A dark mist that roams the streets day and night with no rest. Silence is its speciality. Showing up outside our doors uninvited. Choosing who to take away from us and leading them into a dark abyss where they will never be heard from again. Leaving us empty.
And like it did years ago, the dark cloud was about to be back in our lives again.

My friend @trofhee got me this book. Had no clue I'd learn so much from it. A must read if you haven't!

Having one bad day does not mean a bad life. So,

Having one bad day does not mean a bad life.

So, it’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to feel lonely. It’s okay to feel pain. It’s okay to grieve. It’s okay to feel uncertain. It’s okay not to be okay.

And yes, It’s impermanent. It shall pass. The best thing you can do for your future self is to be present for your emotions today.

“Just so you know, I may be a bit rusty.”

This is pretty much how I started my first ever interview. A bit rusty was just a polite way to say it was going to be messy. That I was going to be him-hawing throughout the entire interview, and this was the type of setting where I do that best. But I had structured questions to make sure I didn’t just mumble words together that made no sense.

“Calm down, I’m the one doing all the talking,” She said, smiling, “you’re just here to listen.”

She was right. My job was simple, ask questions, and listen to her story, which I did. Caffeine came in handy (and this thing is cocaine). It gets you talking when it’s necessary.

“See, it wasn’t that hard, was it?” She said as we wrapped up.

“No, you made it very easy for me,” I replied, my mind elsewhere, thinking of how nervous I was at the beginning.

All I can say about this book is that everything makes sense at the very end. Lots of life lessons from this bad boy. Had to go through it twice! It has a very different approach compared to other spiritual books I've come across. I highly recommend it.

This picture reminds me of a time when one of my friends was 95kg and not the fact that I can’t play chess. ‘Bonge la mtu’ is what I’d have called him if I went to Mombasa for a weekend and came back with an accent. My advice was to get to 100kg and then start his weight loss journey. My logic: 100kg sounds like a good wake up call to start your weight loss journey compared to 95.

Luckily, he never listened to me.

He now weighs slightly less than 80 and I still can’t play chess to save my life. Shame.lol.

Every time we get together, he unearths this board

Every time we get together, he unearths this board, ready for war. He won’t mention his expertise but rather downplays it, making you think you stand a chance.

“I haven’t played for a long time,” he’ll say, using vague timelines to cover up his chess-playing habits. It’s his way of serenading the prey before he pounces. And when he does, he pounces hard and early in the game.

But yesterday was a different story. What better opponent than someone who plays his mind games? Someone who equally downplays his abilities. Making his rustiness known as he slowly sets up the board. An opponent that matches his theatrics. Talking about not having played chess in several years, an old trick to let your guard down.

The former ended up resigning, something that was oddly satisfying to watch. The latter is now the Queen’s Gambit. But not for long.
